KATH to organize breast cancer awareness walk

Kumasi, Sept. 25, GNA - The Oncology Directorate of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), would on October 17, this year organize the Third Annual Breast Awareness walk through the principal street in Kumasi. It would be organised in collaboration with HopeXchange Medical centre, Susan Komen for Cure, and other civil society organisations in the country with the aim to sensitize the public on breast cancer issues. Highlights of issues to be raised would be the need to intensify education on the disease, screening and early detection for curative therapy. A report from the Oncology department revealed that 80 per cent of the cancer cases were diagnosed at the end stage of the disease due to late arrival at the hospital, thus increasing fatality rates. The department also recorded 26 percent and 45 per cent of breast cancer and cervical cancer cases respectively between 2004 and 2006. The report indicated that these women were in the reproductive group. 25 Sept. 08
