The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has acknowledged that the party has faced significant communication challenges over the years.
He stated that this weakness has negatively impacted the party's ability to address major national issues and defend its record in government.
Speaking during an interview on Adom TV’s "Badwam", Kodua explained that the party struggled to articulate its stance on controversial topics such as illegal mining (galamsey) and the National Cathedral project.
“We are establishing a communication structure because when issues related to galamsey, the National Cathedral, and others arose, the NPP could not respond effectively,” he is quoted in a report by adomonline.com on May 11, 2026.
Kodua highlighted the serious deficiencies in the party's communication framework.
“This indicates that as a party, we have significant issues with communication, particularly in how to counter propaganda against us and in proactively explaining our actions as a government,” he remarked.
Despite notable initiatives such as the Year of Roads, Agenda 111, and the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, he noted that the NPP lost the 2024 election partly due to its failure to communicate its achievements effectively to the Ghanaian public.
“In 2024, the same pattern continued. We had initiatives like the Year of Roads, Agenda 111, and Free SHS that alleviated hardships, yet we still lost the election,” he said.
Kodua elaborated that the party only mobilised its communication team during election periods, allowing opponents to shape negative narratives first.
“We realised that we only form the communication team during election seasons, and by that time, any damage our opponents wish to inflict has already been done,” he added.
As part of the reforms, a Communication Committee has now been incorporated into the NPP’s constitution, which is currently chaired by Nana Akomea.
“Now, even before the General Secretary speaks, everything has to be scripted. We must be unified in our communication approach as a party, so that everyone is on the same page and not pulling in different directions,” he concluded.
