15 inmates at the Koforidua Prisons have been granted bail following the approval of their applications during a Justice For All in-prison court sitting held at the facility on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

Speaking to journalists after supervising the proceedings, Justice of the Court of Appeal, Akua Serwaa Asare Botchway, said the programme continues to play a key role in reducing remand populations and ensuring timely access to justice.

Justice Asare Botchway said out of a total of 37 applications filed during the sitting, 2 were discharged unconditionally.

"4 persons changed their pleas. They had been charged with murder, but they pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and they were accordingly convicted.

"21 were granted bail, 4 bail applications were refused for various reasons, 3 applications were struck out, and then 3 referred for psychiatric treatment," she remarked.

Justice Asare Botchway further noted that data from the Ghana Prisons Service records unit indicates the total inmate population currently stands at 13,620.

This comprises 1,745 remand inmates, representing 12.8 percent, and 11,875 convicted prisoners, representing 87.19 percent.

She explained that over the past 19 years, the Justice For All Programme has significantly reduced the remand population in Ghana’s prisons — from 30.57 per cent in 2007 to the current 12.8 percent.

“The Justice For All programme has proven to be more than a response to overcrowding. It has become a symbol of Ghana’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding human rights, and ensuring that justice is not delayed or denied,” she said.

The program, which was launched in 2007, has successfully reduced the remand population from 33% in 2007 to 12% in January 2022.
