Justice Afreh Made Political Decision - Peprah's Lawyer

Lawyer for the convicted former Finance Minister Kwame Peprah says his client’s incarceration will deal a serious blow to public service in the country. Mr. Peprah was handed a four-year prison term for his role in the quality grain scandal in which the country lost some 21 million dollars.

Lawyer Kweku Baah, who represented the former Finance Minister throughout the two year trial, is happy that his client was not convicted for fraud or corruption. But he says the conviction on the grounds of negligence is unfortunate.

''The judgement is unfortunate, the sentence is unjust and unsupported by any known law. I have a lot of respect for Mr Afreh but unfortunately, on this occasion, I think it was the politician in Mr Afreh that was speaking and not the judge in Mr Afreh which I respect. It is unfortunate for this country, it is unfortunate for the public service and it is unfortunate for the politics of this country in the future''.

Mr. Baah who was speaking on JOY FM’s Super Morning show said his client will file an appeal and pursue the case internationally after studying the transcript of the ruling. ''We are not going to leave this matter here. This is a political trial. We cannot have justice in any court in this country, but we leave the matter in the hands of public opinion'', he added.
