One of the victims of the devastating twin disaster which occurred on June 3, 2015, Solomon Akugru, has been enrolled in the National Apprenticeship Programme under the National Youth Authority (NYA).
His enrollment by the government’s agency follows the advocacy and support of notable content creator, Kobby Kyei.
The story of the badly scarred Solomon shared by Kobby Kyei on social media, caught the attention of the public, leading to the intervention by the government.
The enrollment was facilitated by the Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, Osman Ayariga.
Speaking at a brief ceremony at the NYA office and shared on GHOne TV’s X page on June 5, 2025, Ayariga emphasised that the gesture forms part of the Authority’s mandate to empower young people, especially the vulnerable.
“This is not just a publicity stunt by the NYA. These are real, touching stories that, as human as you are, you should be able to reach out and extend a helping hand to people who are suffering. It could be me; it could be you or anyone and we will always need that support and help,” he stated.
Kobby Kyei, known for his advocacy and humanitarian efforts, expressed gratitude to the NYA for their swift response.
“This is the kind of collaboration we need when institutions and individuals come together to restore hope,” he said.
Solomon Akugru, who sustained severe injuries from the 2015 disaster which claimed over 150 lives, said he is overwhelmed by the kind gesture.
“I didn’t expect this. I have struggled for years. This opportunity means everything to me,” he said.
Solomon will be trained in tile-laying under the programme, equipping him with the technical skills as a means to economic empowerment.
The National Apprenticeship Programme is a government initiative aimed at promoting self-employment by offering free technical and vocational training to young people.
Successful apprentices are expected to receive certification, start-up capital, and the equipment needed to establish their own businesses.
