A communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Fredua Agyemang Ofori-Atta, has said that the media is ignorant about proceedings in parliament.

The parliament of Ghana came under criticisms from the media for ignoring multiple-accident victims in Ghana and rather paying tribute to victims of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi which took about 1000 lives.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day Tuesday, Mr. Ofori-Atta said the media criticisms of the legislature are not justified, blaming same on what he said is a lack of knowledge on parliamentary proceedings.

“So, the ignorance or lack of knowledge about proceedings of parliament was exposed, that is how I understood it”.

According to him, the media was not able to recognize immediately that the sitting on Monday was not natural, noting parliament does not usually sit on Mondays but when it does, then it would be for a specific purpose.

He added that on such days, the house usually sticks to their agenda because it is regulated.

“They will also have recognized that the processes of the proceedings of parliament is such that it is actually tight so we can’t just get up and do things if they are sticking to their own rules and regulations”, he explained.

Mr. Ofori-Atta also advised journalists to get abreast with issues to better educate the public.
