Jirapa to represent U/W at national festival

Jirapa District would be representing the Upper West Region at the 13th national basic schools cultural festival to be held in September.

The District came first in choral music at the regional cultural festival held at Nadowli over the weekend.

The festival which was organised by the Ghana Education Service was on the theme: “Our culture, our pride and our identity”.

All the 11 districts in the region participated in the festival which was to help the region select a team for representation at the national cultural festival.

Various cultural groups participated in drama, poetry recital and drum language, dance choreography and choral music.

Sissala East District came first in drama, with Wa Municipality and Jirapa coming first in dance choreography and choral music respectively. Nadowli topped the rest in both poetry recital and drum language. Mr Iddrisu Mahama, the Regional Director of Education, said students were taught cultural studies in schools to complement what they gained from the society.

He called on stake holders to promote cultural studies as it could help mould the lives and behaviours of children entrusted to them.

Mr Kennedy Kemevor, the Deputy Coordinating Director of Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, government was committed to supporting cultural activities to help build the youth of the country. He said a nation or tribe without a culture was doomed and could only follow the direction of the wind.
