Jamaica endorses Ghana-led UN declaration on slavery

Jamaica has reaffirmed its commitment to confronting the legacy of slavery by supporting a Ghana-led United Nations resolution that recognises the trafficking and racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

In welcoming the resolution’s adoption, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared a statement from Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, on Facebook on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Johnson Smith noted that Jamaica’s support reflects both its longstanding engagement in multilateral efforts and its deep historical ties to West Africa.

“Jamaica’s support reflects our enduring commitment to addressing the legacy of chattel slavery and our deep historical connections to West Africa,” she stated.

She further emphasised that the resolution, adopted on March 25 to coincide with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, marks a significant step in global recognition of the atrocities committed during the transatlantic slave trade.

“This declaration is not only symbolic but also a reminder of our responsibility to ensure that the lessons of history guide our pursuit of justice and equality,” Johnson Smith added.

The resolution, backed by 123 countries, underscores the global community’s acknowledgement of slavery as one of the gravest crimes against humanity and strengthens calls for remembrance, justice, and reconciliation.
