Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has indicated that the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) adopted certain strategies to wrestle power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 Election.

He made this assertion while contributing to the ongoing debate about the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector General of Police, while speaking on TV3’s ‘Ghana Tonight’ on March 13, 2025.

He stated that contrary to the claim that Dampare was instrumental in the success of 2024 Election, the party rather won the polls through the vigilance of the citizenry.

“NDC had a lot of people trained. It’s not everything we can say here. So, let’s stop ascribing the success of the elections to the police under Dampare’s leadership,” Kpebu said.

Quizzed on the neutrality exhibited during the Assin North constituency by-elections by Dampare, Kpebu said it was not sufficient grounds to retain him as IGP.

“Listen, you cannot use Assin North - just one constituency by-election, as a yardstick to say that he should be retained as IGP. It’s not sufficient,” he said.

He also indicated that the NDC went beyond campaigning to train the masses to police the electoral process to ensure their votes were accounted for.

“To be very blunt, the NDC had to train a lot of citizens to be on the alert. The police service and the intelligence community themselves knew that if they had attempted to rig the elections, the mayhem that would have happened in this country would be unfathomable,” he said.

He rejected the rhetoric that the professionalism exhibited by the police under former IGP George Akuffo Dampare made last year’s elections peaceful.

“You have no idea what the NDC did. So, let’s stop saying that it is the police service that won elections for this country…,” he said.

Meanwhile, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been sworn in, on March 14, 2025, after he was appointed Inspector General of Police by John Mahama on March 13, 2025.

In a statement by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the president, in accordance with the constitution and the Council of State, made the appointment.

“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector General of Police.

“He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.
