For several weeks, commuters across the country have endured long queues at bus stops, waiting for commercial vehicles, popularly known as trotros.

At times, these vehicles are nowhere to be found, leaving passengers stranded for hours and often late for work.

Amid the shortage, some drivers and their conductors have taken advantage of the situation by charging exorbitant fares, a practice many commuters have described as exploitative and strongly condemned.

Others, desperate to reach their destinations, have resorted to unsafe alternatives, including sitting in the back of pickup trucks, crammed far beyond their expected capacity, just to get halfway to where they are going.

Fuel prices drop to single digits across various pumps.

Addressing the growing concern on January 16, 2026, the Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang described the situation as appalling.

She stressed that it is far from amusing to see citizens spend hours in queues, only to end up frustrated in their attempts to carry out their daily duties.

“Having queues all over the place is not the most effective way for anybody to spend their time, especially when you consider the frustrations the situation is causing. As my Chief of Staff has said, we can also become victims of our own success. When we saw the crowds in town, we all thought it was just Christmas, which was more or less expected,” she said.

“But it doesn’t look like the crowd has left, and therefore, there are persistent issues that need to be resolved. The transport sector seems to have been waiting to exhale, and now we are exhaling, which is good. But in the process, we need to team up and resolve these challenges,” the Vice President added.

She further noted that while the transport sector may finally be “exhaling,” it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to address the challenges.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang made these remarks during a visit to the Ministry of Transport on Friday, January 16, 2026.
