'It is prohibited to bring bush meat into the United States' - Authorities caution

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has cautioned travellers to take note that it is prohibited to bring bushmeat into the United States when travelling.

In a post on X on June 3, 2026, US authorities advised that before travellers prepare to enter the country after an overseas trip, they should check CBP’s restricted items list for guidance on what they plan to bring.

“When travelling into the U.S., please note that bushmeat is prohibited from being brought into the country. Before you come back from your trip abroad, check CBP’s restricted items list about the items you plan to bring back,” the account posted.

CBP has been entrusted with enforcing hundreds of laws on behalf of about 40 other government agencies, including the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US Department of Agriculture, and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

These agencies work together to ensure that unsafe items are not allowed to enter the United States.

According to the agency, the products it prevents from entering the country are those that could injure public health, threaten safety, harm American workers, children, or domestic plant and animal life, or otherwise go against national interests.

Some items may also be restricted because they have the potential to cause harm.

Examples of prohibited items include dangerous toys, vehicles that do not properly protect occupants in a crash, bushmeat, and illegal substances such as absinthe and Rohypnol.

Restricted items, on the other hand, are those that require special licences or permits from relevant federal agencies before they can be allowed into the United States.

These include firearms, certain fruits and vegetables, animal products and by-products, as well as some animals.
