Israel-Palestine War: Ablakwa calls onslaught on Gaza a 'genocide'

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has openly described the ongoing onslaught on Gaza as a “genocide.”

His comments come in response to a new United Nations report alleging that Israel has committed acts of genocide against Palestinians in the region.

Speaking on Channel One TV's The Point of View on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Ablakwa strongly criticised Israel.

"We firmly believe that the events unfolding in the Gaza Strip amount to genocide. We have made our stance crystal clear. We have communicated directly with my Israeli counterpart, the foreign minister, and the ambassador here, leaving no doubt about our position," he stated.

Ablakwa stressed that the Ghanaian government has maintained a principled and unwavering approach to the crisis.

He added that his outfit had offered humanitarian aid to ease the suffering of those impacted by the conflict.

He emphasised Ghana's efforts to engage both Israeli and Palestinian representatives, pointing out that while Ghana maintains friendly relations with all sides, it remains committed to upholding human rights and international law.

"We have also shown solidarity with the Palestinians. For the first time, we have made a meaningful donation to them. We are probably the only African country that has sent aid to Palestine, including made-in-Ghana chocolate and cocoa products. We felt it was essential to stand in solidarity and show that we cannot simply witness these atrocities without taking action," he stated.

The UN report stated there are "reasonable grounds" to believe that Israeli forces have committed four out of five acts defined under international law as genocidal; these include killing members of the group, inflicting serious bodily and mental harm, creating conditions meant to destroy the group, and preventing births.

"While we aim to maintain good relations with everyone, we remain steadfast in our principled position on such issues," he stated.

Ablakwa's comments align with a recent United Nations commission of inquiry report, which concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza.
