Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Omanhene of the Mampong Traditional Area has tasked the Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to liaise effectively with traditional authorities in the planning and implementation of development policies.
This, he said, would help engender socio-economic growth to alleviate the plight of the people.
Addressing the opening session of a two-day Regional Ministers’ conference in Kumasi at the weekend, Daasebre Osei Bonsu said enhancing the welfare of the citizenry was not the sole prerogative of central government but a shared responsibility.
By sharing ideas with traditional authorities, he said, the nation would be taking a major step towards achieving her development objectives as pertained to the Millennium Development Goals, adding that both the decentralized assemblies and traditional authorities had a responsibility to serve the people.
The conference held under the theme: “Re-energizing Regional Level Governance for the Attainment of the Better Ghana Agenda”, was facilitated by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).
It aims at digesting government development objectives with the view to bringing them in line with the aspirations of the people at the regional level.
The conference also had the objective to craft strategies for the realization of the nation’s development agenda, sensitize the ministers on their responsibilities and also assess their performance for the nation’s benefit.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu indicated that issues pertaining to security of the people, performance of the decentralized assemblies and achieving the overall development objectives of the nation should continually engage the attention of policy makers.
Mr. Eric Opoku, Ashanti Regional Minister, advised his colleagues to take the conference seriously to build their capacity for effective work.
