International Community Urged To Restore Constitutionality In Sierra Leone

Accra The Minority group in Parliament has called on the international community to ensure the immediate restoration of the constitutional government of Sierra Leone. In a statement, the group said it supported the legitimate request by President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah for foreign military intervention to reverse last Sunday's coup d'etat and restore peace and sanity to the country.

The group expressed the hope, however, that the intervention will be made unnecessary by a voluntary restoration of the constitutional government. Sierra Leone after going through years of a traumatic civil war deserves more than yet another round of chaos, violence and misery as the so-called coup d'etat threatens to unleash on the people, the Minority group added.

It further called on the government of Ghana to "act with circumspection and condemn the coup in no uncertain terms." "At this stage of our constitutional development process, we cannot afford to associate our nation with the usurpers of the people's power. "We must begin to take the moral high ground in the politics of the sub-region and only associate ourselves with nations that share our democratic aspirations in our quest for good governance," the Minority statement added.
