The Minister of Interior, Ambrose P. Dery has exclusively told mynewsgh.com that his ministry has granted amnesty to persons illegally possessing weapons to immediately register them.

“We have first granted an amnesty for people to come and register. We inaugurated the board last week and we are now going to come out with a strategy a as to how to stem that. We also need to close our borders to the proliferation of arms coming from Libya and all over in the sub region. All measures that have been put in place have not brought any change so we need to be more innovative and think outside the boss. That is the challenge we have given ourselves”, he revealed.

He indicated that there are efforts to strengthen collaboration between the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons and the security agencies to ensure that the illegal possession of weapons is nib in the bud.

The Minister also confirmed that the security agencies under his ministry are constraint in terms of logistics for several years indicating that the deal secured from China by vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to deal with the situation.

“All these security agencies have been inadequately resourced for a number of years. It is in that vein the vice President went out to China and has come with some grant he wants to apply to equip the place.

One has to do with the movement, second has to do with the weapons, third has to do other equipment such as the protective and then above all the training, to know how to use it when and how. All those things were promised in the manifesto and we are working together to get it done”, he revealed.
