Darshan Bipim Shas, 37, an Indian who is HIV positive was remanded on Friday for defiling two 14-year-old girls in Accra. He would, however spend his remand at the Police Hospital where he would undergo a diagnostic test and treatment for foot rashes.

His HIV/AIDS status was announced at an Accra Circuit Tribunal, chaired by Mr Imoru Ziblim. And when the news broke out, one of the victims let out a loud scream, which stunned people in the court.

Two Ghanaians, said to be Darshan's accomplices, Kwabena Amesigah and Jonathan Sowu, both traders, are charged with aiding and abetting the crime. They were granted ?10 million bail each until 21 June. The tribunal chairman requested that fresh medical report on Darshan's HIV status should be submitted to the tribunal at the next adjourned date.

Prosecuting, Inspector E.T. Boison told the court that on 14 March, the mothers of the victims had a tip-off that they went to the Labadi beach and were lured by Amesigah and Sowu to the Indian to have sex with him for a fee. Darshan then took them to the Green Leaf Hotel at Osu and had sex with them on separate occasions for a fee of 150,000 on each day.

Amesigah and Sowu were arrested and they led the police to Darshan's shop where he was arrested. He admitted the offence and told the police that he did not use any protective measure. Darshan was sent to the Police Hospital for medical examination and the result proved that he was HIV/AIDS positive.

Unconfirmed reports have it that one of the victims became suspicious when she questioned Darshan about scars on his back, which resembled that of shingles. Darshan replied that he had HIV/AIDS but the girl did not take it serious until she heard the news in court.

Counsel for Amesigal and Sowu in praying for bail, argued that they were traders at the beach and were only asked by Darshan to call the girls for him.

Darshan's counsel rejected the facts as presented by prosecution, saying that the accused should be granted bail because he needed medical attention. When his application was rejected, counsel then prayed that his clent could be kept at the Police Hospital because he was pneumonic and also suffering from foot rashes.
