The People’s National Party (PNP) has extended Mother’s Day greetings to Ghanaian mothers while renewing calls for the government to implement the long-awaited Affirmative Action Law and operationalise the Women’s Bank initiative.
In a statement issued on Sunday, May 11, 2025, to mark Mother’s Day, PNP Chairperson and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla, expressed gratitude to Ghanaian mothers for their sacrifices and contributions to national development.
She emphasised the need for the state to formally recognise and support the role of mothers in society.
According to Nabla, an estimated 24% of households in Ghana are headed by women, and married women contribute nearly 80% to child upkeep and household needs highlighting the central role women play in family and economic life.
According to a metrotvonline.com report, the PNP leader criticised the government for what she described as its ‘lukewarm attitude’ toward the passage and enforcement of the Affirmative Action Law.
“The government’s lukewarm attitude makes it difficult for ministries and agencies to implement the law, let alone expect the private sector to comply. The government must honor its promise to pass and implement the Affirmative Action Law to ensure at least 30% representation of women in public and private sectors”, she indicated.
She argued that this reluctance has hindered ministries and agencies from implementing gender equity measures and discouraged the private sector from following suit.
She urged the government to fulfill its promise to ensure a minimum of 30% representation of women in both public and private institutions, stating that meaningful progress in gender equality cannot be achieved without decisive legislative action.
“The government must honor its promise to pass and implement the Affirmative Action Law to ensure at least 30% representation of women in public and private sectors”, she said.
The party also took issue with the handling of the Women’s Bank initiative, questioning the transparency and effectiveness of the GH¢400 million allocated to the project.
“How many branches can that amount build, and where? Accusing the current administration of politicising the project instead of making it people-centered”, she noted.
Proposing an alternative approach, the PNP pledged that a future government under its leadership would use GCB Bank and the National Investment Bank (NIB) to provide low-interest loans to women entrepreneurs.
“The PNP sees you women, values you, and will stand for you,” Nabla affirmed.
