Ignore curfew rumours in Accra – Police

The police have said residents of Accra can go about their duties this evening, June 25, 2018 without fear, dispelling rumours of curfew from the Ga Traditional Council.

A section of social media users issued warnings to their friends in the Greater Accra region to remain indoors by 7pm Monday over a traditional rite to be observed in the Ga Mashie enclave.

Some traders had to close their shops early with others rushing home while making calls to family and friends to seek refuge in case they are unable to beat the 7pm deadline.

The police, however, debunked the rumours, asking citizens to feel safe since it is the Interior Ministry which is mandated to issue any curfew fiat.

The Director of Operations for the Accra Regional Police Command Chief Superintendent Kwesi Ofori said no traditional council has the power to impose curfew hence the rumours should be disregarded.

According to him, the traditional leaders within the Ga Mashie jurisdiction have denied knowledge of any curfew.

The head of public affairs of the AMA Gilbert Nii Ankrah also corroborated the assertion of the police.

He said the Ga Mashie traditional authorities are observing a traditional rite “later in the night” in connection with the Homowo festival, “but no warning has been issued for anyone to be indoors.”

“The other time there were some confusion so I suspect people are spreading this because of what happened the other time,” he stressed to Starrfmonline.com.
