Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, a political scientist and senior lecturer at the University of Ghana and a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed confidence in the party's ability to guide Ghana towards a prosperous future.
He said he believes that the NDC can achieve its development goals if the government maintains its current trajectory.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show on June 18, Dr Asah-Asante commended the government’s early achievements, while emphasising the need for focus and commitment to ensure the country reaches its intended destination.
"I am hopeful, and I have no doubt in my mind that this government has started well," Dr Asah-Asante stated.
His assertion is based on the NDC's comprehensive development agenda.
"I hope and pray that they remain afloat and deliver on all the promises made to the people. From the little that is happening, there is hope. If they stay on course, we will reach our destination," he added.
Addressing President John Dramani Mahama, Dr Asah-Asante urged the administration to prioritise economic restructuring and industrialisation as key components of its Reset Agenda.
"Mr President, economists and financial analysts have long stressed the urgent need to restructure Ghana's economy to create opportunities and meaningful employment so that people can earn a decent living. I fully support this view and urge you to place it at the heart of your Reset Agenda," he shared.
Dr Asah-Asante's statement serves as both a cry for party supporters and a message to Ghanaians that a better future is achievable with the NDC in leadership.
He further highlighted the importance of leaving a lasting legacy rooted in industrial development for the country.
"You must not leave office without establishing a robust and sustainable industry. Industrialisation is widely recognised as the key driver of economic transformation, and it should be part of your enduring legacy, not an industry that fizzles out after your tenure, but one that thrives and creates lasting jobs for Ghanaians," he emphasised.
Drawing attention to Ghana's rich agricultural resources, Dr Asah-Asante noted the untapped potential for value addition and job creation.
"Consider the abundant crops and fruits we cultivate. Can’t we process these, add value, and generate employment? During former President Kufuor's tenure, he was introduced to fourteen (14) different products derived from cocoa. I believe initiatives like these can ignite new industries," he further explained.
As the NDC continues to outline its vision for Ghana's development, Dr Asah-Asante believes that with a sustained focus on economic restructuring and industrialisation, the nation can secure lasting progress and build a strong legacy, as the party's commitment to its ideals will be tested.
"Mr President, this must form part of your legacy. That is my message to you," he added.
