The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has expressed deep regret that the anti-LGBTQ bill was not signed into law during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He believes its enactment would have significantly benefited the nation.

According to the MP, if the bill, which seeks to criminalise activities of the LGBTQ community, including homosexuality and lesbianism, had been passed, Ghanaians would not have witnessed the recent incident involving tourists identified as homosexuals entering the country and allegedly desecrating national monuments.

Ntim Fordjour stated that he would have been the "happiest Ghanaian" if former President Akufo-Addo had assented to the anti-LGBTQ bill after its passage by the 8th Parliament.

“If under former president Akufo-Addo, the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values bill was signed, I would have been the happiest person. I was part of the individuals who pleaded with the president to sign the bill because I was one of the people who were the leading sponsors of the bill. If he had signed it, it would have helped greatly. The bill is already dead but we have resubmitted it before parliament,” he stated on Peace FM today, Monday, June 30, 2025.

His comments come in the wake of a widely circulated incident on June 24, 2025, involving a South African same-sex couple photographed kissing at Ghana’s Independence Monument and other significant historical sites across the country.

The incident sparked widespread public outcry, with many condemning the act as provocative.
