IWD 2026: Foundation calls for empowerment and equal opportunities

Correspondence from the Eastern Region

The Divine Mother and Child Foundation today joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, honoring the achievements, resilience, and leadership of women and girls across Ghana and around the world.

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March, 8 recognises the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also advocating for gender equality and the protection of women’s rights.

This year’s global focus emphasizes advancing women’s rights and strengthening justice systems so that women and girls can fully enjoy their rights and opportunities in society.

In a statement issued by the Foundation, it reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare of women, girls, and families through education, community support, and advocacy for gender equality.

“Women are the backbone of families, communities, and nations. On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate their strength and contributions while renewing our commitment to empower women and girls with the opportunities and resources they need to thrive,” the statement said.

The Foundation emphasised that empowering women is essential for sustainable development and stronger communities. Despite progress, many women and girls still face challenges such as limited access to education, economic inequality, and gender-based discrimination.

The organisation therefore calls on government institutions, civil society organisations, community leaders, and the private sector to work collaboratively to promote equal opportunities for women and girls, support women’s education and leadership development, strengthen protection against gender-based violence, and encourage women’s participation in decision-making at all levels.

As part of its activities, the Foundation will continue to support initiatives that uplift vulnerable women and children through community outreach, mentorship programs, and advocacy campaigns.

The Divine Mother and Child Foundation also encourages individuals and organisations to celebrate International Women’s Day by recognising the contributions of women and supporting initiatives that promote gender equality.
