The Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu is under attack by a former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yammin over his calls for the disbandment of vigilante groups in the country.

He challenged him to point at one person he arrested when he was given a directive by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to arrest masquerading party youth who had outstepped their bounds and were seizing toilets and vehicles upon assumption of the current administration.

“The IGP is a hypocrite to ask that vigilante groups should be disbanded. When the president gave him an order that when certain persons go beyond their mandate they should be arrested, how many has he arrested”, he asked.

According to him, Mr David Asante-Apeatu does not really understand the meaning of vigilante and that if he did, he would not be asking for such groups to be scrapped from the system.

“What is his explanation of a vigilante? Those asking for the disbandment of vigilante groups are all hypocrites because at each party event, the security are always asking for details of our internal security. The trend that should be a source of concern is with the illegalities”, he added.

It would be recalled that the IGP last week directed political parties to denounce vigilante groups claiming allegiance to them with immediate effect.

According to the IGP, it is against the country’s laws for political parties to have such groups that have recently been disturbing the peace of the country.

“We want to appeal to all political parties to immediately denounce their own vigilante groups to create the necessary awareness that will embolden the police,” Asante Apeatu stated.

The police he revealed are poised to arrest and profile any group of people claiming to be vigilante groups irrespective of their political affiliations.

“We are declaring zero tolerance against political violence and vigilantism”, he promised.
