IGP commends Police for curtailing disturbances at Yendi

Accra, Sept. 1, GNA - Mr Patrick Kwateng Acheampong, Inspector-General of Police, has commended the Northern Command for their display of professionalism in curtailing the recent disturbances at Yendi and urged them to do more for total peace to prevail in the area. Mr Acheampong, who was at Yendi as part of a four-day tour of the Northern Regions also called on the youth of Dagbon to cooperate with the Police and other security personnel in the area to enable them to protect life and property to bring about the total development of the area.

Three people were killed last week Friday when youths from one of the two feuding Gates in the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute attempted to storm the Gbewaa Palace. Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Ofori of the Police Public Relations Directorate told the Ghana News Agency on Friday that the Police Chief, who has since ended the tour, visited all operational locations of personnel and urged them to endeavour to maintain the peace in Dagbon. He said the visit raised the morale of Police officers, who had been stationed there to maintain the peace.

Mr Ofori said the IGP handed over two light armoured vehicles to the Northern Command for their operations. The IGP charged the Commands of the Northern Regions to coordinate their operations to stem highway robberies. He advised communities living along the highways to report the movements of suspicious persons to the Police.
