Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has hosted a high-powered delegation from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in Accra as part of efforts to deepen cooperation between the Ghana Police Service and the US law enforcement agency.
The delegation was received at the Police Headquarters alongside members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), where both sides held discussions on contemporary policing challenges and opportunities for collaboration.
In an official post on Facebook on March 13, 2026, IGP Yohuno described the visit as a significant step toward strengthening international cooperation in combating crime, particularly transnational criminal activities.
“This engagement reflects the importance of collaboration between law enforcement institutions across borders. Through shared knowledge, training and intelligence cooperation, we can better address emerging security challenges,” he stated.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the use of technology in modern policing, including data-driven policing systems, digital investigative tools and integrated intelligence platforms that support operational decision-making.
The two sides also exchanged ideas on improving officer safety and welfare through enhanced training, equipment and institutional support mechanisms designed to protect personnel while improving operational effectiveness.

A key component of the meeting was the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ghana Police Service and the NYPD aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation through information sharing, joint training and collaboration on transnational crime investigations.
Members of the NYPD delegation noted that partnerships between police institutions are essential in addressing modern crime threats that often cut across national boundaries.
“Policing today requires strong international partnerships. By working closely with the Ghana Police Service, we can share best practices, strengthen investigative capabilities and enhance our collective ability to combat organised crime,” a member of the delegation said.
Beyond the high-level meeting, the delegation held working engagements with operational units of the Ghana Police Service, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau and the Police Intelligence Directorate.
The team also toured the Joint Operations Center at Police Headquarters, where they were briefed on Ghana’s integrated command and control systems used to coordinate nationwide policing operations and incident response.
As part of the visit, discussions were also held on the possibility of officer exchange programmes between the two institutions.
The proposal includes the placement of a senior NYPD detective at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra and the embedding of a senior Ghana Police Service officer within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau in New York.
The NYPD delegation also paid courtesy calls on the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo, where discussions focused on national security coordination and intelligence sharing.
They also met with the Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Accra, Rolf Olson, as part of broader engagements aimed at strengthening cooperation between Ghanaian and US. security and law enforcement agencies.
