First Lady Lordina Mahama has promised the people of Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo region that she would do her best to bring sustainable development in the area in addition to the efforts the government is making to develop the region.
Speaking as a special guest of honour at the Munukuo festival of the people of Nkoranza on Friday July 15, Mrs Mahama, who hails from Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo Region, noted that the development of the region was a collective responsibility, not only the government’s, hence her resolve to use her foundation, the Lordina Mahama Foundation, to help attract development to the area.
“The truth is that Nkoranza has also had its fair share of development projects. As it is said often, if your mother is in the kitchen, you will never go hungry. In this case, your daughter is in the kitchen,” Mrs Mahama, who is the Sompahenmaa of the Nkoranza Traditional Area, said.
She called on others in the position to help develop the region to do so as part of the collective efforts at developing the region.
The Omanhene of the Nkoranza Traditional Area, Nana Agyeman Kudom IV, expressed his appreciation to the First Lady for her support towards the development of Nkoranza. He mentioned, in particular, the provision of an ICT centre for the Nkoranza Technical Institute, the organisation of free health screening exercises, and the provision of transport services and exercise books for schoolchildren.
The chief added: “The political stability, expansion of socio-economic infrastructure, unity, and development that the traditional area has enjoyed are unprecedented. There has been an increase in road infrastructure, improvement in education and health facilities, which are all very encouraging.”
Touching on the festival, he explained that the Munukuo festival was established by the traditional authorities and was celebrated every 40 days in the year. The recent occasion was the fifth in 2016.
He said in order to promote peace before, during, and after the general elections, the Nkoranza Traditional Council would set up a seven-member team comprising chiefs and queens, who would be charged with the responsibility to preach and promote peace in the various communities.
The Omanhene also called on civil society, unit committee members, religious leaders, and assembly members to join the campaign for a peaceful and successful electioneering period in Nkoranza.
