A former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has blamed the woes of the NPP on dishonesty.
Addressing issues surrounding the internal wranglings in the party on Okay FM, on May 12, 2025, he attributed the ongoing matters to the disregard for constructive criticisms and dishonesty.
He stressed that the lack of appreciation of dissenting views from members of the party is not limited to only the NPP but other political parties as well.
“Honesty has eluded African leaders and this goes for all political parties – the NDC, the CPP and others. The lack of honesty by leadership in handling processes in the party has left many supporters disgruntled. When you point out their dishonesty, they say that you are bitter because you were not given a position,” he decried.
He challenged critics to come out to confirm or deny if he didn’t caution against some policies the NPP rolled out.
“Critics should come out openly to respond to my claims – they should ‘bring me my stone,’” he recounted in Twi.
In furtherance of his point, he explained that on occasions he had criticised the National Cathedral project, centralisation of food supply to schools under the School Feeding Programme, and other policies, he was instead lambasted.
“When I spoke against the tax regime, National Cathedral, and called for the decentralisation of food distribution for the School Feeding Programme, and other policies, I came under intense attack from some party members.
“Some critics even blamed me for the party’s loss but the issue is that they turned deaf ears to constructive criticisms against the government,” he stated.
On another score, Obiri Boahen called for a review of the electoral college system for the selection of parliamentary candidates within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He argued that the delegate system has given rise to monetisation of the process, which irks other card bearing members of the party.
“Parliamentary primaries have seen candidates pay huge sums of money to delegates. In some cases, delegates are given expensive electronics like fridges, television and so on. When regular party supporters see this development, they get disgruntled and may punish you during the general election,” he added.
Against this backdrop, he further called for a review of the electoral college system to expand the exercise to all card bearing members.
