I was never embittered when Adams Mahama disrupted NPP’s Bolga Meeting - Afoko

Mr. Gregory Afoko, the man accused of the murder of the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama has denied being embittered when the latter stormed a party meeting with his boys to disrupt proceedings.

The suspect who was being cross-examined by Lawyer Mathew Amponsah a Chief State Attorney at the Accra High Court said he did not attend the meeting which was held at Azonsolom Guest House because he was not an executive of the party.

He also disclosed that at no point was he bitter when news went viral that the meeting was stopped by the late Adams Mahama he described as a brother.

PART ONE OF THE CROSS-EXAMINATION OF GREGORY AFOKO BY MATTHEW AMPONSAH, ESQ. CHIEF STATE ATTORNEY

I put it to you that apart from your name, where you live and the fact that you were arrested by the police in connection with this case, all that you have told this Honourable Court today is not true. A: I disagree with you.

Q:You have told this court that you live in Bolgatanga. Is that not so?

A:Yes.

Q: Where is your real hometown?

A:I am a native of Sandema.

Q:Were you born in Sandema?

A: No.

Q:Where were you born?

A: I was born here in Accra.

Q: It means you were not born in Bolgatanga where you live.

A: No.

Q: For how long have you lived in Bolgatanga before this case occurred?

A:My whole life I lived in Bolgatanga because my father settled in Bolgatanga.

Q:You have told this court that you are a member of the NPP.

A: Yes.

Q:Do you hold any position in the party?

A:No.

Q: But you are a member of the youth wing of the party.in Bolgatanga.

A:Yes. I am.

Q: You also play very active role in the party in Bolgatanga.

A: I may say yes and no.

Q: What do you mean by yes and no?

A:I do go to Navrongo, Paga and Sandema to canvass for votes for the party but not in Bolgatanga.

Q: By this answer you have given it means you are very active in the NPP in general and not Bolgatanga alone.

A: Yes. It is because my dad was a member of the Council of State and a founding member of this party. So in short, the whole of our family are members of this party.

Q: For this answer you have given you will agree with me that you are very much concerned about the welfare of the NPP.

A:That is so.

Q: In your evidence-in-chief you mentioned the name of suspect Asabke Alangdi.

A:Yes. I mentioned his name.

Q: How did you get to know him?

A:Being a member of the party we sometimes meet and discuss matters of the party. There I got to know Asabke Alangdi.

Q: So you know Asabke as a member of the NPP?

A:Yes. I know him as a member and the organiser of his electoral area.

Q: For how long have you known Asabke before this case?

A:I knew him for over 5 years.

Q: For the 5 years you have got to know Asabke the two of you had been together quite often.

A:No.

Q: But you agree with me that you and Asabke have been taking part in party activities together.

A:It is not always.

Q: Yesterday in your evidence-in-chief you told the court that you were related to the deceased Adams Mahama. Is that not so?

A:Yes.

Q: Can you tell the court how you were related to the deceased?

A:The deceased’s grandfather was a merchant and when they got to our village my grandfather late Afoko who happened to be the Chief of Sandema gave the deceased’s grandfather land to settle at Sandema and he got married to one of our sisters.

Q:So by this description you knew the deceased very well.

A:Yes.
