'I survived in silence' - Speaker Bagbin opens up about treatment under Akufo-Addo's government

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has spoken about the ordeal he endured under the previous government, led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to a news card shared on Facebook by JoyNews on November 4, 2025, Bagbin said that the Akufo-Addo government stripped him of virtually all his entitlements as the Speaker of Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament said that even his official vehicles were taken from him.

"I survived in silence" - Alban Bagbin recounts how he was stripped of almost all his entitlements, including vehicles and courtesy, in his first term as Speaker," the news card reads.

It can be recalled that in January 2022, the Ghana Armed Forces withdrew the military personnel attached to the security detail of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

The then government dismissed assertions that the withdrawal of the military attachment to the Speaker of Parliament by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) was an attempt to stifle his protection.

But speaking on the issue during an engagement with the parliamentary press corps in November 2022, Speaker Bagbin said the move was politically motivated.

He listed several individuals whose offices are relatively lower than that of the Speaker of Parliament, yet who enjoy military protection.

"The Chief Justice has a military, as well as Ministers have their own, and each Supreme Court Judge, but the EC Chair has a battalion. My brothers at the Ministry of Defence and Interior both have, and the Attorney General has his own.

"The same as the Minister for Finance, but the Speaker is not entitled to a military," he bemoaned.
