'I lost everything' - Adenta building collapse victim shares harrowing experience

A tenant turned victim in Adenta has emotionally recounted her traumatic ordeal after a two-storey building collapsed due to heavy rains on Wednesday night, leaving her displaced and uncertain about the fate of her belongings.

The victim, who had only moved into the property four months ago, was at work when the incident occurred.

She described rushing back to the scene amid frantic calls from concerned individuals, only to be confronted with the devastating aftermath.

Multiple feared dead as storey building collapses at Adenta

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Victoria Kyei Baffour on June 4, 2026, the visibly shaken tenant narrated, “I had just moved in four months ago. Yesterday, I was at work and planned to return home early because I was tired, but the heavy rains kept me back. While preparing to leave, I started receiving calls urging me to rush home. They asked if I was inside because the building had collapsed, but I told them I wasn’t,” she disclosed.

She further narrated that upon reaching the scene, she saw her landlord — who had initially been trapped — being evacuated into an ambulance.

When asked whether she was able to retrieve her belongings from the damaged building, she explained that she had to spend the night in someone else’s home and even wore borrowed clothes to shelter herself and her daughter.

“When I arrived, I saw my landlord being evacuated into an ambulance, while his wife and children were still trapped,” she added.

“Right now, I am wearing someone else’s clothes because I haven’t been able to go inside to retrieve my belongings. I left at midnight to sleep in another person’s house, and even as I speak, I don’t know whether my items are safe or not,” she said.

Rescue operations at the scene confirmed one fatality (the landlady), while several others, including children, were trapped under the rubble.

Emergency services, including the Ghana National Fire Service and police, worked through the night to rescue survivors.

This incident adds to growing concerns about structural safety in parts of Accra following heavy downpours.
