Nigeria has assured Ghana of its support in tackling endemic corruption.

This was revealed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr Muhammadu Buhari at Ghana’s 61st Independence Day celebration at the Independence Square in Accra on 6 March 2018.

The special guest of honour congratulated the government of Ghana and parliament for passing the Special Prosecutor Bill into law.

Mr Buhari said: “Your Excellency, my tribute to you and the people of Ghana will not be complete without acknowledging your efforts at tackling corruption which is eating into the fabrics of our societies. I congratulate both the government and parliament for the quick passage of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act and its signing into law. Your Excellency can be assured that you have a good partner in me as I look forward to any form of collaboration between Nigeria and Ghana in tackling the menace of endemic corruption.”

Government passed the Special Prosecutor Bill into law in July 2017.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor occupied by former Attorney General, Martin Amidu, is a specialised agency to investigate all cases of corruption involving public officers, politically-exposed persons as well as individuals in the private sector implicated in corrupt practices and to prosecute these offences on the authority of the Attorney-General.

President Akufo-Addo is hopeful the Special Prosecutor will help reduce corruption especially in the public sector to its barest minimum.
