I have nothing to apologise for - Paul Adom-Otchere

Host of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has denied releasing a letter of apology which has gone viral on social media for saying Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, never won an election.

According to him, he has nothing to apologise for and that an attempt to extract an apology from him is a testimony that the program sufficiently made the case.

Mr Adom-Otchere was criticised by admirers of Dr Kwame Nkrumah after he made a comment on Accra-based Citi FM in a debate with Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. that one of the misconceptions taught at the universities is that Dr Nkrumah was voted for as president.

“Let me also correct one thing as a political science student that people don’t know. Dr Nkrumah never won a presidential election in Ghana, in the way we have it today, never! Dr Nkrumah never won a presidential election in Ghana, never!” the journalist told Accra-based Citi FM debate.

He added that the claim was supported by the account of Dr. Nkrumah himself on page 208 of his own book.

“I have nothing to apologise for but I thank comrade Kwesi Pratt for accepting to participate in the discussion on Citi FM,” he stated.

In the supposed false letter it says, "I solemnly take full responsibility for the embarrassment caused, the Ghanaian community both home and abroad and the world as a whole. I, therefore, render an unqualified apology to the family of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the CPP and all Ghanaians and hope that going forward, this shall serve as a guide in my future exploits." Please kindly accept my apology.

He added that the false letter had his name wrongly spelt and couldn’t have emanated from his office.

"My surname is actually wrongly spelt and thus the document could not have originated from my desk."

The comment brought lots of mixed reactions from Ghanaians.
