The Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has stated that he has never harboured any interest in assuming the position of Attorney General and Minister of Justice, despite his name coming up as a potential appointee.
Speaking to Bernard Avle of Channel One News on Monday, January 27, 2025, Mr. Ayariga, who recently succeeded Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as leader of the National Democratic Congress caucus in Parliament, said he had no interest in the Attorney General job despite his legal background.
“I have never really been interested in being Attorney General,” he said.
“I saw people on social media advocating for me to be Attorney General, saying I would be a good Attorney General, but it is not a job that I have ever really been interested in,” the Majority Leader added.
On what influenced his decision to take up the position, the Majority Leader said he felt the need to take up a leadership position in the legislature, having served various roles in the executive arm of government in the past.
“The reason why I considered leading the caucus is because I had been in the executive; I have served as a presidential spokesperson, I had been deputy minister, I had been minister in several ministries. The one job I have never really done was to lead the caucus,” he stated.
The NDC claimed a massive victory by winning the 2024 presidential election and securing a significant majority of parliamentary seats.
Following the elevation of the former majority leadership to various ministerial roles, a cohort of leaders has been named by the NDC to lead the party in the 9th Parliament.
Mahama Ayariga, who is the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has been appointed as the new Majority Leader, succeeding Dr. Forson. Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, the MP for Cape Coast South, has been named the Deputy Majority Leader.
In other changes, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, has taken over as the Majority Chief Whip, replacing Governs Agbodza.
Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, the MP for Ada Constituency, will now serve as the First Deputy Whip, while Richard Acheampong, MP for Bia East, assumes the role of Second Deputy Majority Whip.
