Ghana’s newly commissioned Ambassador to South Korea, Kojo Choi, has shared a deeply personal and emotional reflection on his appointment, expressing profound gratitude for the opportunities Ghana afforded him as he prepares to serve the country as a diplomat.

The Ambassador, who was commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama on October 1, 2025, took to Facebook to express his "utmost appreciation over the opportunity to serve."

In an emotional post, he detailed his life’s journey from a struggling student to a diplomat, asserting that "Ghana raised me. Ghana educated me. Ghana shaped me."

"I go not only as a diplomat, but as a son of Ghana who has been nurtured by her grace," he said in a post on his Facebook page on October 3, 2025.

Recounting the commissioning ceremony, the Ambassador noted the absence of his immediate family but shared that he was surrounded by key figures who had guided his path.

"My parents, my wife, and my children could not be there, but God had prepared others who had walked alongside me as a family," he wrote.

He acknowledged the presence of Teddy Konu, the former Registrar of the University of Ghana, who stood in for his father, and Margaret Nkrumah, the founder of SOS College, who represented his mother.

He also recognised Dr Nathan Annobi, a friend of 20 years, and Stephen Danso, a former Consular Officer at the Ghana Embassy in Korea who taught him diplomacy, alongside two Korean friends, Mr Hong and Mr Han.

The Ambassador spoke candidly about his educational struggles, which were ultimately overcome through the generosity of institutions and individuals.

He recalled receiving a near-full scholarship at the newly established SOS College, where he completed the Cambridge IGCSE and the IB Diploma, gaining "access to world-class education and new opportunities."

He shared a powerful anecdote about his admission, stating that out of 700 applicants, he ranked 42nd, but " Nkrumah chose me."

His challenges continued at the University of Ghana, Legon, where he struggled to pay the "international student tuition fees" on time.

He credited Konu, the former Registrar, for ensuring he could continue his studies.

"Every semester was a struggle... Whenever that happened, I would go to see the Registrar, Mr. Konu... I was able to graduate from Legon," he said.

The Ambassador described his appointment as the culmination of his life's story—a proof of Ghana's decision to "adopt me, educated me, and raised me as her own."

He believes President Mahama chose him precisely because he "understands the language, culture, and heart of Ghana more deeply than many, to return to the land of my birth, Korea, as Ghana’s Ambassador."

The emotional weight of the moment was evident when he read the Vote of Allegiance.

"I had to fight back tears as I uttered the words, realizing how far the journey had been from a struggling student to a servant of Ghana," he stated.

Looking ahead, the new Ambassador affirmed a deep sense of responsibility and hope for his tenure in Seoul.

"I go not only as a diplomat, but as a son of Ghana who has been nurtured by her grace," he declared. He pledged to strengthen the bonds between Ghana and Korea, not only in trade and diplomacy but also "in culture, education, and mutual understanding."

He ended with a prayer that his service will "honor God, uplift Ghana, and inspire the next generation of young people who may one day find themselves walking a similar path."
