Philanthropists often have personal stories behind their act of giving and one of such cases is that of Priscilla Naa Aklerh Ocantey, who guided our team People and Places through her painful experience and lessons in running a foundation after her horrifying motor accident.

On her part, she is determined to embark on a long-term improvement plan to literally change the trajectory of people’s life by building a shelter for the poor and street children.

Madam Ocantey did not only discuss the defining moments that inspired her to transform lives but also opened up to share her failures which have evolved and shaped her life.

Materializing her vision after what she described as a ‘life changing experience’, that left her with having to live with just one functioning arm, she explained that philanthropic work isn’t immune from devastating, notwithstanding unintended, consequences.

It could also be deduced from Naa Aklerh’s sad story that no matter how much one tries to build the right environment, it is also important that all risks should be anticipated and not in any way undermined.

She reflected “When I was a kid I had wanted to do charity but I thought of it like I would work, get all the money and when I reach 50 or 60, I’ll start helping people. In 2013 when I had a life changing experience, I was put on edge and hit with a certain reality that I could be here today and not be here tomorrow so that pushed me. I spoke to a few friends that let's go do a donation to an orphanage. This is my vision. I want to help street kids and build a shelter”.

In her current condition, the victim (Naa Aklerh Ocantey) together with her ReachOut foundation team has touched the lives of over 9,000 people across 5 regions of the country.

Orphanages, street children and the likes have also immensely benefitted from her benevolence.
