How supply chain innovation could boost Ghana’s economy - Dr. Iyadunni Olaleye explains

As the Republic of Ghana is racing to strengthen its economy amidst global inflation, the Nigerian businesswoman and supply chain expert, Dr. Iyadunni Olaleye, has extended her business expertise to address key economic challenges. As the MD/CEO of Dunny Stores, Dr. Olaleye is determined to leverage her vast experience in business and supply chain development to support Ghana’s economic growth.

Dr. Olaleye has identified major challenges affecting Ghana’s economy, including inadequate policy frameworks, poor infrastructure, and significant trade barriers. These issues have resulted in a fragmented supply chain that hinders business operations and discourages investment. Additionally, the urgent need for digitalization in Ghana’s business landscape is paramount to improving global competitiveness and streamlining trade processes.

Aligning with the U.S. Department of State’s assessment, Dr. Olaleye acknowledges other pressing economic concerns, such as high government debt, particularly within the energy sector, low revenue mobilisation, corruption, high youth unemployment, and inefficient state-owned enterprises. She underscores the importance of building a solid domestic revenue base, as Ghana, despite having a population of 33.8 million and over 14 million potential taxpayers, sees only six million individuals filing annual tax returns.

To address these issues, Dr. Olaleye emphasizes the need for structural reforms that foster economic resilience. She advocates for increased investments in infrastructure to ease trade barriers, improved digitalization to enhance operational efficiency, and the promotion of policies that support local and foreign business investments. Her approach aims at reducing Ghana’s dependency on foreign aid while fostering sustainable economic growth.

Dr. Olaleye’s expertise stems from a robust educational and professional background. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, and a Master of Business Administration from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, United States. Her distinguished contributions to business and supply chain development earned her an honorary doctorate degree from Heim Weldios University in Benin Republic. She also served as the Procurement and Operations Manager at Guarantee Trust Bank (GTBank) in Ondo State, Nigeria, further cementing her reputation as a strategic business leader.

In a virtual interview with the former Principal Registrar of Ghana’s Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Dr. Olaleye expressed her belief that Ghana has immense potential to become a leading business hub in Africa and beyond. She urged policymakers and business leaders to embrace innovative supply chain solutions and strategic investments that drive economic recovery and sustainability.

With her vast experience in business economic development, Dr. Olaleye’s intervention presents a unique opportunity for Ghana to revamp its economic policies and unlock new growth avenues. Her vision could be instrumental in shaping a prosperous future for Ghana’s economy, transforming challenges into opportunities for progress and innovation.
