Reggae icon Gramps Morgan has revealed the remarkable story of how he first encountered Ghanaian Afro-dancehall star Stonebwoy in Jamaica, disclosing that he initially mistook the ‘Mightele’ hitmaker for a Jamaican.
Narrating the story at a Ghana-Jamaica Heritage Summit in Accra, Ghana, on April 1, 2026, Gramps Morgan explained that the encounter was entirely unplanned.
He had been scheduled to perform at a packed club in Jamaica when he noticed that the parking lot outside was larger than the venue itself, prompting him to move the show outdoors and invite reggae and dancehall artistes in attendance to perform.
It was during that impromptu open-air showcase that a young Stonebwoy caught his ear.
"That's where, amongst many other artistes, I discovered a young youth named Stonebwoy and amongst all the artists performing that night, he sounded the most Jamaican for some reason.
“I'm like, is he from Jamaica or is he Ghanaian? Someone said, 'No, he's from Ghana.' I said, 'Impossible'," Gramps Morgan recalled.
The Morgan Heritage member said he later briefly crossed paths with Stonebwoy in the VIP area that night, but years later, a spiritual nudge changed everything.
"Morgan Heritage went on tour again, and the spirit said to me, 'Call that young man.' And I reached out to him and said, 'I want you to be the opening act for Morgan Heritage on our European tour,'" he revealed.
Gramps Morgan said that the invitation proved to be a defining moment for the Stonebwoy, one which he seized and never looked back from.
"That’s why Stonebwoy doesn’t look back. He has pushed, pushed, pushed, and now he's one of the prominent artists in Ghana," he said.
