How Dolly Parton built a business empire beyond music

From a humble childhood in rural Tennessee to becoming a global icon, Dolly Parton’s story is one of grit, talent, and sharp business instincts.

Her journey showed how music success became the foundation for a much wider business empire.

In a 2017 interview with the BBC, Parton revealed that her earliest business lessons came from her father, who, despite being unable to read or write, had a keen sense of money and work.

When she entered the music world, Parton treated her talent as a business. She kept ownership of her songs and established her own publishing company, a decision that became the cornerstone of her financial success.

“My dad wasn’t an educated man, but my daddy had a great sense of business...He said on’t let other people take advantage of you. You keep your mind on your business,” she narrated.

Her father's advice shaped her approach to the industry.

She didn’t stop at music. In 1985, she co‑founded Sandollar Productions, expanding into film and television.

A year later, she became co‑owner of Dollywood, a theme park in Tennessee that has since grown into a major tourist destination.

The park later expanded with the DreamMore Resort in 2015 and additional attractions, cementing Dollywood as a thriving hospitality brand.

Her ventures have continued to diversify. In 2025, she launched Dolly Beauty, a cosmetics line, and in 2026 opened Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop, further extending her reach into retail and lifestyle.

Journalist Paul Milliken, who has interviewed Parton several times, said her ability to invest across industries is a key reason behind her enduring success.

Despite her wealth, Parton has remained grounded, crediting her poor upbringing for her simple approach to money.

“Being brought up poor means I don’t take things for granted, and no matter how much money I make, I’ll always count my blessings quicker and more often than I count my money,” she said.

Her empire today spans music, film, hospitality, beauty, and retail, proving that behind the rhinestones and stage lights lies a savvy entrepreneur who turned talent into a lasting legacy.

She died on August 25, 2026, at age 80.
