How CID and school authorities 'cornered' SHS assault suspects

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Lydia Yaako Donkor, has confirmed the arrest of two students in connection with the violent assault on a pupil of Obrachire Senior High Technical School during a district inter-school athletics competition in the Central Region.

In an update on Facebook on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Donkor said the arrests were made within 24 hours after school authorities were directed to produce the students involved in the incident, which was captured in a viral video that sparked widespread public concern.

“Within 24 hours of my directive to school authorities to produce the students involved in the assault, action was taken. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the assault on a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School, an incident captured in a viral video that generated widespread public concern,” she said.

The suspects, identified as Benedict Appiah, 18, and Bilal Mamud, 18, were apprehended and handed over to the Agona Swedru Divisional CID to assist with investigations.

Donkor noted that the arrest was facilitated by authorities of Swedru School of Business, led by the Assistant Headmaster in charge of Domestic Affairs, Michael Nii Kwaku Buxton.

“On February 23, 2026, at about 9:00 pm, authorities of Swedru School of Business, led by Assistant Headmaster Michael Nii Kwaku Buxton, apprehended the suspects and handed them over to the Agona Swedru Divisional CID to assist with investigations,” she added.

She stressed that investigations are ongoing and warned that all other individuals connected to the assault must voluntarily report to assist with the probe.

“All other individuals connected to the assault are directed to voluntarily report to assist with investigations. Failure to do so will result in them being tracked, arrested, and made to face the full rigors of the law,” she cautioned.

The CID Director-General also emphasised that acts of violence in educational institutions will not be tolerated.

“Violence in our educational institutions will not be tolerated. Discipline, safety, and accountability in our schools remain non-negotiable,” she said.

The incident, which occurred on February 19, 2026, involved students from Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) and Obrachire Senior High Technical School.
