Housing costs should match income levels – Rent Commissioner

Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku says accommodation prices around university campuses should reflect the income levels of tenants.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Super Morning Show on May 12, 2026, Opoku argued that landlords and developers operate at different tiers, and these tiers determine the market and income groups they serve.

“As a producer, when you start operating, you have the first tier, second tier, third tier, and fourth tier. You may produce for one level, and at that level, you have categories of income,” he explained.

Opoku stressed that stakeholders must avoid exploiting consumers with excessive pricing if they want to remain viable and fair in business.

He also called for greater use of local building materials to reduce costs and boost the local industry.

“It is important that we have a lot of local materials,” he stated.
