Hospital develops drug for Buruli Ulcer wounds

Mampong (Ash), March 16, GNA- The Health Research Unit of the Asante-Mampong District Hospital has developed a drug that can heal Buruli Ulcer wounds.

However, the drug cannot regenerate the tissue, Mr Jacob Amoah, a Pharmacist at the hospital and leader of the research team, disclosed at Mampong last Friday.

Receiving a quantity of food items from the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for the upkeep of People Living With AIDS (PLWA), Dr George Acquaye, Medical Superintendent of the hospital and a member of the research team, said the drug was extracted from a plant and that what was left was clearance from the Ministry of Health to empower the unit to conduct further research into the drug.

The donation of the food items worth millions of cedis, included large quantities of cooking oil.

He expressed optimism that with the donation of the food, the unit can now treat 100 PLWA a year and appealed to other organisations and philanthropists to assist the unit to take care of AIDS victims. He also called for support for the unit to acquire Lap Top computers and projectors to enable the unit embark on a more effective health education to reduce the prevalence of the disease.
