High fluoride levels in boreholes in Yendi

Yendi June 26, GNA - Fluoride has been detected in some five boreholes in five communities in the Yendi Municipal Assembly of Northern Region and these boreholes have been closed. The communities are Gbungbaliga, Kulinkpegu, Lamakdo, Gnani and Buli.

The Yendi Municipal Water and Sanitation team leader, Mr. Sani Mahama, said this when he briefed newsmen at Yendi about the situation of some boreholes in the Yendi Municipal Assembly. Mr. Sani said acceptable level of fluoride content by World Health Organization WHO is 1.5 milligrams per litre but this has been higher in the boreholes of these particular communities. He said this was revealed after water quality test was conducted on some newly drilled boreholes including other rehabilitated ones by NORWASP, a CIDA funded water project and facilitated by community water and sanitation (CWSA).

He said a number of children below 20 years have tooth decay due to the high fluoride level in the boreholes. Mr. Sani said a team from the Yendi Municipal Assembly has visited the communities to sensitize them on the dangers this would pose on them if they continue to drink the high fluoride water.
