The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has announced when the implementation of the new Legal Education Reform Act will take effect.
He explained that full financial provisions for the implementation of the Act will be included in the 2027 Budget Statement to be presented by the finance minister in November 2026.
Speaking to journalists after President John Dramani Mahama signed the Bill into law on Monday, May 11, 2026, Dr Ayine said implementation of the Act would begin immediately with the establishment of the Council for Legal Education.
“We will also start the process of accreditation of the law schools that will be running the Law Practice Course, or those who have LLBs and decide to write the Law Exams, all of which will start this year.

“We will be making budgetary provision for the implementation in 2027 to be announced by the Finance Minister in November this year,” 3News.com quoted him as saying.
He further explained that the accreditation process for universities and institutions seeking to run the Law Practice Course would commence this year.
This includes institutions that will provide professional legal training for LLB graduates preparing to sit professional law examinations.
The new Act effectively ends the 66-year monopoly by the Ghana School of Law over professional legal education in the country.
Under the reform, accredited public and private universities will now be permitted to offer professional legal training, significantly expanding access to legal education in Ghana.
Speaking at the signing ceremony at the Jubilee House, President Mahama welcomed the development, describing it as a major breakthrough for aspiring lawyers.
“This would ensure the highest standard in terms of legal education, and also open up the space for more opportunities for legal education in Ghana,” he stated.
