Here's how much Buffer Stock Company is requesting to address food glut

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company, George Abradu-Otoo, has said the company has requested GH¢770 million to address the current food glut in the country.

According to him, although the company is expecting a GH¢200 million budgetary allocation, the amount is still insufficient.

Speaking to the media in Accra on November 12, 2025, Abradu-Otoo highlighted long-standing funding gaps, noting that the company has never been able to mop up excess produce from farmers due to a lack of funds.

He stated that, in the interim, the company has deployed contact agents to farm gates to purchase excess produce for storage.

Cabinet approves funds for Ghana Buffer Stock amid food glut concerns

“Initially, we were given GH¢100 million. The minister wrote to me recently that they have added another GH¢100 million. I hear that in the next budget, which will be read on Thursday, there’s some GH¢200 million that will come. It’s like a drop in the ocean, but I am happy because this is the first time this is happening. For so many years, nobody ever gave Buffer Stock money, no government provided funds for the Buffer Stock to go out to the field and mop up the excess produce,” he stated.

He noted that moving forward, the company is committed to using its limited funds to make a meaningful impact on Ghana’s food storage and security system.

“This is just the beginning. The amount of money I requested is far higher than what has been allocated to us, but I am steadfast in the comfort that it is a modest start. We are in the field now, and very soon the noise will go down,” he added.
