Here is why Ghana must invest in quantum science

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has made a strong case for quantum science and technology to be taken seriously by developing countries including Ghana, pointing out its role in national development.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025) on February 10, 2026, he stressed the need for countries to leverage advanced science to tackle pressing global challenges.

Haruna Iddrisu explained that science holds particular relevance for nations like Ghana, where agriculture supports livelihoods and food security.

Quantum technologies could improve soil and water management, enhance climate forecasting, and boost agricultural productivity.

“For countries where agriculture sustains livelihoods, such as Ghana, quantum science remains significant. Education remains the strongest foundation investing in teachers, researchers will determine how this application will be useful in Africa and the rest of the world,” he said.

The minister pointed to UNESCO’s designation of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, noting that the initiative reflects the rapid pace at which quantum science is shaping the modern world.

“The proclamation of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology by UNESCO signals the growing importance of quantum science in today’s world,” he stated.

Haruna Iddrisu said despite growing interest in science, many countries lack coherent science and technology strategies.

He stressed the importance of international collaboration, noting that global cooperation is key to turning advanced knowledge into practical national capacity.

“Our experience with international scientific initiatives has demonstrated how global cooperation can be translated into national capacity and real-world impact.
