Herbalist sets up school for street children

Akuma (B/A), Nov. 1, GNA - Nana Adonteng Poku, a 51 year-old herbalist at Akuma in the Nkoranza South District of the Brong Ahafo Region, has initiated a school project to offer free tuition to street children and school drop-outs.

He said the academic facility called Nana Adonteng Poku International School, which started two years ago, has 410 pupils and a workforce of 13.

Nana Poku, who made this known to the Ghana news Agency at Akuma, said he had provided seven classrooms and a bus to convey the children from their homes to the school.

He said the project is his contribution to the national crusade against the phenomenon of street children and to support the educational drive among children of school-going age.

Nana Adonteng expressed regret that a number of children in the area are found loitering during school hours, hence his motivation to set up the school to encourage them to pursue education.

"I have been managing the school without requesting the parents of the children to pay school fees and what they only offer is GH¢ 0.50 for feeding."

Nana Adonteng called public spirited individuals and organisations to support the project.
