Helicopter Crash: GJA suspends all planned activities

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has suspended all its activities in the wake of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology and MP for Tamale Central, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

According to the GJA, the suspension of its activities will remain in effect until further notice.

“Following the tragedy, the National Executive has suspended all planned activities of the Association until further notice,” a statement signed by the GJA president, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour said.

The crash, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, involved a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, confirmed the identities of the deceased at a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Among those who died were the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Also, on board the ill-fated flight were Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Muniru Mohammed; former Member of Parliament Samuel Aboagye, and Samuel Sarpong, a former Ashanti Regional Minister and now Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The three crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah were also killed in the crash.
