Heavy Floods Leave Bolgatanga In Havoc

Floods in the Upper East Regional capital, Bolgatanga, have caused considerable damage to property and left many homeless. The devastation followed a four-hour heavy downpour. So serious was the flooding that some people in the worst affected areas had to climb unto rooftops to seek refuge as vehicles and houses were submerged.

The Regional Minister, Mahami Salifu and the Bolgatanga District Chief Executive, Rockson Bukari, together with some town planning officials and representatives of the security agencies, have since visited the hardest hit areas, to assess the damage caused and the plight of the residents. It came to light during the inspection that poor drainage system and the construction of buildings in waterways are the main causes of the floods.

The regional minister, therefore, charged all stakeholders to review the overall planning and outlay of the Bolgatanga township. He also charged the District Chief Executive to call an emergency meeting with those concerned with the planning of the district, to find out how best to address the problem of unauthorised structures.
