Health authorities hold emergency meeting on CSM

Officials of Ghana's Ministry of Health at Bolgatanga on Friday held an emergency meeting to plan strategies to fight the spread of Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in the region.

A source close to the Bolgatanga hospital said the meeting became necessary following an increase in the number of people reporting to the hospital with symptoms of the disease.

The source said since there are different types of meningitis, the authorities are yet to find out which of them is on the outbreak before making a requisition for the correct drug to combat it.

A visit to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital showed so many people on admission for suspected cases of CSM while many others were waiting in long queues for vaccination against the disease.

Some sections of the public here, however, suspect that there is an outbreak of CSM, which kills a patient if not attended to within days, but that the health authorities are only reluctant to accept the situation.
