Health Focus: What everyone should know about PCOS

September is globally marked as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shedding light on a condition that silently affects millions of women across the world, including here in Ghana.

Despite its prevalence, PCOS is often misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or even dismissed, leaving many women to struggle in silence.

Speaking to Stella Dziedzorm Sogli on the latest episode of Health Focus on GhanaWeb TV, a Specialist of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr Francis Baidoo, said PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age.

According to him, it occurs when the ovaries produce an excess of androgens, male hormones that women also have in small amounts.

"This imbalance disrupts normal reproductive processes, often leading to irregular menstrual cycles and other complications," he said.

He added that the exact cause of PCOS remains unclear, but it is linked to a combination of genetic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors.

"Insulin resistance, low-grade inflammation, and hereditary predisposition are among the major contributors," he said.

In addition to these, he explained the risk factors, treatment options, and lifestyle changes that can help in managing PCOS.

"As we observe PCOS Awareness Month, let us remember that no woman should walk this journey alone. By listening, supporting, and advocating, we can build a society that uplifts women living with PCOS," the specialist admonished.
