Health Exemption Scheme Under Threat

Government can no longer sustain the health exemption scheme because of lack of funds.

Dr. Samuel Akor, Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Ministry of Health, disclosed this.

He said another factor militating against the successful running of the scheme is the difficulty health institutions face in identifying children under five and the aged.

Dr. Akor made the disclosure while speaking on the topic “Increasing access to health – the National Health Insurance Scheme” at the 55th Annual New year school.

He said under the exemption policy, children under five years, pregnant women and the aged above 70 years are to enjoy free health care at public health institutions.

However, “In Ghana, it is difficult to identify who is under five years old and who is 70 years and above.”
